The ​​​24th ​​​Annual ​​​ACMRS ​​​Interdisciplinary ​​​Conference ​​​is ​​​an ​​​annual ​​​gathering ​​​of ​​​scholars, ​​​students, ​​​retirees ​​​and ​​​members ​​​of ​​​the ​​​general ​​​public ​​​interested ​​​in ​​​medieval ​​​studies. The ​​​conference ​​​features ​​​selected ​​​papers ​​​focused ​​​on ​​​the ​​​theme ​​​“Reading ​​​the ​​​Natural ​​​World: ​​​Perceptions ​​​of ​​​the ​​​Environment ​​​and ​​​Ecology ​​​in ​​​the ​​​Global ​​​Middle ​​​Ages ​​​and ​​​Renaissance”, ​​​roundtables, ​​​panel ​​​discussions, ​​​a ​​​pre-conference ​​​manuscript ​​​workshop ​​​and ​​​a ​​​performance ​​​from ​​​Les ​​​Enfan ​​​Sans ​​​Abri. ​​​The ​​​conference ​​​lasts ​​​three ​​​days, ​​​from ​​​Thursday, ​​​February ​​​8, ​​​with ​​​sessions ​​​beginning ​​​at ​​​1 ​​​p.m., ​​​until ​​​Saturday, ​​​February ​​​10 ​​​at ​​​9:00 ​​​p.m. ​​​ ​​ ​

Inhabiting Medieval Landscapes
Dr. Bintley is a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society, a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, a councilor of the Viking Society for Northern Research, and Associate Editor of Cogent Humanities journal. He is also the editor of the book series Nature and Environment in the Middle Ages for Boydell and Brewer.


A screening and discussion of the documentary The Devil’s Country. Produced by the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for the History of Emotions, this film examines how early European settlers and explorers understood the natural landscape of Australia in terms of the medieval demonic and the gothic while posing questions about colonialism and the effacement of the Indigenous that are entailed in telling European medieval stories in colonial contexts.


ACMRS will host a workshop on manuscript studies led by Professor Timothy Graham, Director of the Institute for Medieval Studies at the University of New Mexico. The workshop will be held on the afternoon of Thursday, February 8, and participation will be limited to the first 25 individuals to register. Email acmrs@acmrs.org with “Pre-Conference Workshop” in the subject line to be added to the list. The cost of the workshop is $50 ($25 for students) and is in addition to the regular conference registration fee.


Since 1989, the ad hoc medieval/Renaissance drama troupe Les enfans sans abri (LESA) has been performing comedies all over the country and even in Europe.


Selected papers focused on “Reading the Natural World: Perceptions of the Environment and Ecology in the Global Middle Ages and Renaissance” will be considered for publication in the conference volume of the Arizona Studies in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance series, published by Brepols Publishers (Belgium).


Proposals will be accepted on a rolling basis until midnight, Mountain Standard Time on December 1, 2017. Responses will be given within a week of submission. Please submit an abstract of 250 words and a brief CV to ACMRSconference@asu.edu. Proposals must include audio/visual requirements and any other special requests; late requests may not be accommodated.

For the past several years, the Renaissance Knowledge Network (http://rekn.itercommunity.org) has sponsored sessions at the ACMRS annual conference exploring the intersection of computational methods and Medieval and Renaissance Studies. For the 2018 gathering, we invite paper proposals that explore any topic related to the study and teaching of the Middle Ages and Renaissance and its intersection with the Digital Humanities, including and beyond those aligned with the general theme of the conference. Please send paper proposals including a title, one paragraph abstract, and brief biographical statement by 15 November 2017 to acmrsDH@gmail.com.
